PHEASANT’S EYE
Adonis aestivalis
This plant originated from Europe. An easy to grow annual, it hqas
finely divided, thread-like leaflets and produces a multitude of cupshaped,
dark-centred 1” flowers (much like anemones). It blooms in early summer
and, if deadheaded, will continue blooming sporadically until frost.
Direct seed in early spring. Does well in slightly alkaline well-drained

‘Indian Spring’
Althaea rosea
Although in fact a perennial, ‘Indian Spring' has been grown as an
annual since the 1930s. A good vertical accent in any garden sporting
large 12 cm single, ruffled flowers in shades of rose, red and white.

MEXICANUM DWARF BALL
(BLUE BALL)
Ageratum
Also known as the Floss Flower, it has been a
garden staple for over 75 years. native to the
warm areas of North and South America, this
annual produces mounds of frothy, blue flowers.
It is at home in either border plantings or in
naturalized gardens. The 30 cm plants bloom
from June until frost. Tolerant of many soil conditions,
they usually self seed.

Agrostemma githago
In Greek it means ‘garland of the fields’. This delicate looking cottage
garden favourite is sturdier than it looks. Deep pink flowers will
bloom all summer at the back or middle of the border. Good for naturalizing
with poppies, larkspur or cornflowers. Will self-seed. Grows 60-70
cm tall. Great cut flower, Enjoys poor, welldrained soil in full sun.

A native of South Africa, specifically the Cape of Good Hope, this
one is a must for blue lovers! Clusters of tiny blue flowers adorn
20 cm stems on this biennial that is treated like an annual. A member

fertile soil and full sun to partial shade. Try it in a mass with

BLUE-EYED AFRICAN DAISY
Arctotis grandis
Arctotis grandis Originally from South Africa, these heat loving plants
thrive in sandy, well drained soil. The 10 cm silvery white, daisy-like
blooms with blue disk florets are borne on 50 cm stalks from mid-summer
to fall. the tops of the 12 cm lobed leaves are deep green on the
top and silvery green on the bottom creating an interesting contrast
when stirred in the breeze. Does best when direct seeded.

Hummingbirds love this 2 - 3 m. vine that boasts rosy pink 7 cm long
trumpet-shaped flowers that resemble snapdragons. Native to Mexico
where it is called Hummingbird Vine, it can also be grown as a houseplant.
Makes a dense screen of soft green along a fence or arbour. Start

Native to Australia, these easy to grow delightful
airy plants bear masses of dainty daisylike
flowers among deeply cut, grey-green, fern-line

Clarkia elegans
The clarkia genus was named after the first "official" non-native
explorer who crossed the Rocky Mountains in 1806 who came upon these
exquisite flowers. The elegant clarkia bears long, self-supporting
stems covered with frilly flowers like 60 cm double roses in salmon,

CLEOME
Of Mediterranean origin, this member of the caper family is easy to
grow and definitely will make a statement, especially when planted
in a mass. The species name, hasslerana, is after the plant collector
Emile Hassler. The flowers of cleome are 15 - 20 cm across but because
they are open and airy, they always look graceful. Though the leaves
and stalks are sticky and thorny cleome makes wonderful cut flowers.
Plant them with cosmos to capture a Victorian atmosphere. Early 1800’s.
