37. CHINESE PAGODAS Collinsia heterophylla
Bands of lilac/white bi-lobed flowers grow around the stems at intervals like a pagoda high rise. These shade-loving plants were popular in Victorian times for children’s gardens. 'Kosmos' is Greek for beautiful. Well named for its graceful form and glowing colours. One of the most adaptable and versatile of all the easy annuals. A true "cut and come again"; cutting stems for bouquets only encourages more sideshoots and more flowering right through fall. Introduced in the early 1900’s. D.S. or Tr. for flowers in 8 weeks. Back by popular demand! Introduced in the 1890’s, this species is quite different from the bipinnatus. ‘Sunset” bears deep orange, ruffled flowers only 60 cm across, but with the same profusion and heat tolerance. Ht 70 cm, Sp. 20 cm O.

40. 'SENSATION' Cosmos bipinnatus
AAS Gold Medal winner in 1936 and still one of the best. Simple 10-12" daisy-like flowers in gorgeous shades of pinks, red and white on wellbranched, self-supporting plants 100 cm tall. Asensation against a house, fence, the back of a border or a meadow garden. Sp 30 cm.

46. CHINESE FORGET-ME-NOT Cynoglossum amabile
Named for the Greek words for dog (kyon) and tongue (glossa). Seeds of this biennial (treated as an annual) scattered in drifts in early spring will grow 40-60 cm tall for a gorgeous mid-summer show of deep blue flowers with gray green leaves. Try sowing with calendula, allysum or candytuft. Moderately fertile, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Over fertilization will promote course leaf growth at the expense of flowers. D.S.

Originating in Mexico, these easy to grow, showy annuals will dominate your summer border. The semi-double flowers range from very light pastels to gaudy neons and everything in between. This plant will reward you with a profusion of blooms. Feeding them bonemeal in June and August will promote blooming. Deadheading is essential to flower production. Discovered in Mongolia this old standby with finely cut, feathery foliage came to Canada in the early 1920’s. Great for pots or the border it boasts large elf-capped-shaped marine blue blossoms on multi branches. For a stunning show, plant in a mass and give it sun/part shade and well-drained soil. From ‘diaskeo’ meaning ‘to adorn’, this native of South Africa is a member of the snapdragon family.
