These Australian natives love a hot, sunny spot
in the garden and will reward you with 7 cm double-
flowered blooms ranging from white and
yellow to scarlet. Cut and hang them in small
bunches away from direct sunlight to dry thedn

annual after the last frost or start them indoors

Heliotropium arborescens
From ‘helios’, the sun; ‘trope’, a turning of;
(flowers turning to the sun). This native of Peru
was a very popular plant in victorian times. It
grows to 120 cm high and one foot wide and flowers
profusely through the summer boasting
trusses of rich purple, sweetly-scented, butyterfly
attracting blooms. Start early indoors. Sow

MEXICAN TULIP POPPY
Hunnemania fumarifoia
Named after a 19th century botanist, this tender
perennial that is treated like an annual is loaded
with clear yellow flowers on lacey green
foliage. Growing up to 150 cm high it will bloom 5
weeks after germination and keep blooming all
summer long. Hailing from Mexico, it needs
full sun and well drained soil. The flowers are
7 cm wide and are reminiscent of California poppies
but the plant is bushier and taller. Great cut
flower.

CANDYTUFT
Iberis
The name ‘candy’ is from Candia, the ancient
name of Crete and ‘Iberis’ comes
from the original name for Spain
and Portugal. Also known as
candy mustard, this plant
was used as a cheap substitute
for mustard and thus
shunned by estate gardeners
of yesteryear. Tidy, lowgrowing
masses of colour are
perfect for edging.
