COLUMBINE - GRANNY'S BONNET COLUMBINE Granny’s Bonnet aquilegia vulgaris Originally a British native, this medieval cottage garden favourite has adapted well to our climate. The nodding heads in a medley of colours. is a true classic plant for your cottage garden. They bloom in early summer. We have seen them thrive in the hot sun along the edge of our gravel roads as well as in the forest openings in our cedar woods. They are very tolerant of a variety of soil and light conditions and reseed quite readily. Type: Perennial Zone: 3-9 Light: semi-shade Soil: moist but well-drained humus Spacing: 30cm Height: 40 to 50cm Season: early summer Propagation: Prechill seeds. Direct seed in autumn, and keep moist. They will bloom the following year. SEED COUNT: Approx. 200 seeds Native to North America and to Europe the columbine is the symbol of folly, according to the language of flowers. The shape of the flowers is similar to the cap and bell of a court jester's hat. Giving this flower to a woman was considered bad luck. |
