CLEOME - VIOLET QUEEN Cleome hasseriana - Of Mediterranean origin, this member of the caper family is easy to grow and definitely will make a statement, especially when planted in a mass. The species name, hasslerana, is after the plant collector Emile Hassler. The flowers of cleome are 15 - 20 cm across but because they are open and airy, they always look graceful. Though the leaves and stalks are sticky and thorny cleome makes wonderful cut flowers. Plant them with cosmos to capture a Victorian atmosphere. Early 1800�s. Pale bluish-purple hues make a frothy show in the border or massed with �White Queen�. Good self seeder. Type: Annual Light: sun Soil: well-drained, good soil. Spacing: 45cm Height: 100 to 125cm Season: summer to frost. Propagation: Direct seed in early spring. OR Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Germinate @ 18C. Plant out after frost danger.
