POPPY - PEONY POPPY Peony papaver somniferum A much sought-after flower, though hard to find, these sumptuous, richly-coloured heirlooms resemble double peonies. Huge 10cm blooms in lavender, red, white and pink. Leaves are smooth and lettuce-like. Type: Annual Light: full sun Soil: not fussy Spacing: 20cm Height: 80-100cm Season: June through September Propagation: Direct seed in early spring or autumn. Cover lightly. Sow seeds in autumn for early blooms in the spring. They despise transplanting. SEED COUNT: Approx. 700 In 1932, garden writer Henry J. Moore wrote “They occur in colours which baffle description, comprising such delicate shades as apricot and salmon, and among pinks such as rose, blush and flesh and through to the most brilliant of crimsons.” Note: Poppies are tap-rooted and do not take well to transplanting, so sow the seeds in flowering position in early spring or fall, thin and deadhead to keep flowers coming. |
