SQUASH - WINTER, BUTTERNUT Waltham Butternut -The standard Butternut Squash. The fruits average 25cm and 1.5 to 2 kg. Flesh is smooth and has a sweet flavour especially after 2 months storage. Plants average 4-5 fruits. Light: Full Sun Soil: Rich, well drained Spacing: 60cm Height: Vine Maturity: 85 days. Propagation: Direct seed in late Spring when soil is warm (21C) (seeds will rot in cold soil) OR Start indoors 2-3 weeks before planting out. Plant out after frost danger and weather is warm. Harvest: Before heavy frost. Cut fruit from stem and leave in the field for 4-5 days to cure. OR Alternately bring indoors and cure @ 27-32C for 3-5 days with ventilation. Store @ 10-15C.
